Michelle (Shelley) Metje has been in the fields of Social Work and Education for over 30 years. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, a Master’s Degree in Organizational Development Psychology and a Master of Arts degree in Management. She has worked with abused and battered women, adjudicated and urban core youth, and non-traditional students in a post-secondary educational setting.

In July 2013, Shelley’s eldest son Corey Laykovich was murdered. He was 22 years old and had no life insurance.  This sudden traumatic event created a monetary crisis for her family. Not only did she have to pay for her son’s funeral, but her family faced the psychological impact and the financial crises that accompany a loss of this magnitude.

Shelley’s faith, resiliency, determination, and love for her son helped her find the strength and motivation to found Corey’s Network, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates for the surviving victims of homicide. Through the network, families receive counseling, learn about the investigation and court proceedings, obtain help in navigating the media, and receive a portion of the funeral expenses. Corey’s Network, Inc. has helped pay for over 300 funerals and has reached victims of homicide nationwide with its services.

Shelley is a true people’s person. She is a 2017 recipient of a Woman of Distinction Award, The House of Representatives “Glory of Missouri” award and is a published author. She is also a member of the National Association of Professional Women, Member of the National Professional Honor Society, and Non-profit Connect. Corey’s Network, Inc. and Shelley have been featured on Kate Snow’s “Relentless” Fighting for Corey, October 2019, on the Oxygen Channel. Shelley is the co-author of Missouri House Bill 2086 (nicknamed “Corey’s Law”) which will govern evidence collection.

What Shelley has experienced and witnessed combined with her ongoing desire to serve and help others lead her to join our team and the New York Life Insurance Company. Shelley’s focus here is educating and coaching individuals and business owners about the importance of adequate financial protection. Shelley helps clients implement income and asset protection strategies.

Sincerely,

Jorge E. Orozco & Michelle (Shelley) Metje
